History
Development of AutoCAD began in 1977, when AutoDesk CEO Tom Pollock decided that he wanted to bring about a transformation in the field of computer-aided design, as he put it. At the time, most CAD programs were very rudimentary, and were easy to learn but difficult to use. He envisioned a CAD program that would be simple to use and could be used by non-CAD users. This meant that it would not only have to be easy to learn but would also be intuitive, making it simple for non-CAD users to become productive.
Pollock hired a team of people to work on AutoCAD, whose first task was to determine how the user interface would be designed. The team created an icon-based interface using a design called the Command Approach, which proved to be a success.
In 1982, the first version of AutoCAD was released, and it was designed to be used on desktop computers running the then-current version of Microsoft DOS operating system. By the early 1980s, most of the computer microcomputers in use had internal graphics controllers, so AutoCAD was able to utilize the hardware to create 3D objects, and display them on a computer monitor. When Microsoft released Windows 3.1 in 1987, AutoCAD 2.0 was the first program to support Windows.
In 1996, a new version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, was introduced. It was designed to run on microcomputers, minicomputers, and mainframes that lacked internal graphics controllers. It was more of an "appliance" than a desktop program.
