Blake's work was largely underestimated while he was alive; his belief, that humanity could overcome the limitations set by the senses, is perhaps his greatest legacy. Blake could be considered a precursor of Nietzsche, Freud and W. Reich in the critique of religion, the reversal of social values, the idea that animal and sexual instincts should not be totally repressed, and of a cosmic energy that pervades everything. In the 20th century Blake was finally appreciated in literary and artistic circles thanks to S. F. Damon, G. Keynes, D. V. Erdman and G. E. Bentley Jr; Jung himself: "Blake (is) a tempting study, since he has compiled a lot of knowledge, half or undigested in his fantasies. In my ideas they are an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes". W. B. Yeats drew on him for poetic and philosophical ideas, while British surrealist art drew on Blake's conceptions of visionary practice with artists such as P. Nash and G. Sutherland; his poetry was used by British classical composers such as B. Britten and R. V. Williams and modern British composer as J. Tavener set many of Blake's poems. Blake had a huge influence on the beat poets of the 50s and the counterculture of the 60s such as beat poet A. Ginsberg, songwriters as B. Dylan and Van Morrison, most notably in the quote "the doors of perception" often heard echoes in twentieth-century literature and music as in the writer A. Huxley and later J. Morrison; much of P. Pullman's His Dark Materials fantasy trilogy is rooted in his world and later in popular culture emerged in areas such as music, movies and comic books, leading E. Larrissy to claim that "Blake is the romantic writer who exerted the most powerful influence of the twentieth century ". His songs were set and adapted by famous musicians including U2, Jah Wobble, Tangerine Dream, B. Dickinson, Ulver and M. Ward, A. Gray and A. Ginsberg were influenced by him. The graphic novel genre draws its origins from Blake's recorded songs and prophetic books, as does the genre of fantasy art; several characters from the World of Tiers book series by writer P. J. Farmer (1966) are named after and in part inspired by Blake's work; this mythology is indicated by the characters in the stories (mainly in The Gates of Creation, Red Orc's Rage and More than Fire). The Unlimited Dream Company. Blake's painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun both play a prominent role in T. Harris's novel Red Dragon (1981), in which the murderer F. Dolarhyde has an obsession with the painting. In Hannibal, a copy of Blake's painting The Ancient of Days is owned by M. Verger. S. Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses (1988) contains a short episode in which the characters discuss Blake's marriage of heaven and hell.The best-selling crime thriller novel in the 2017 R. Langdon series Origin, written by Dan Brown, incorporates the text of Blake's poems; Blake was particularly influential on the young generation of early 20th century English landscape painters, such as P. Nash and D. Carrington. A. Moore cites Blake's work in V for Vendetta, Watchmen and his subsequent work in From Hell and Angel Passage (2001). Grant Morrison, R. Crumb and JM DeMatteis all cited Blake as one of their main inspirations, and comic artist W. Blake Everett claims to be descended from Blake. In his film Mean Streets (1973), Martin Scorsese refers to Blake's poem "The Tyger" and a variation on a line of Blake's America in Prophecy appears in R.
