David Baszucki and Erik Cassel had long-time dreams of building a game-creation platform. They saw the entertainment industry shift from movie theaters and playing cards in friends’ basements to the gaming consoles that dominated homes. Cassel said that he wanted to create a video game that would get kids to draw and play together, which was a concept he had learned playing computer games in the 1980s.
Roblox was founded in December 2004 by Cassel, Baszucki, and Ronald Johnson. The company was named after a character from the 1990 French film Space Invaders. Roblox was an early example of game-creation software for the internet. The company initially offered web-based browser games and entered the Windows desktop computer market in 2005 with Canabalt. They tried to monetize the software by selling Robux, Roblox’s virtual currency, but that strategy was unsuccessful. A year later, the company had about 50 employees.
In the spring of 2006, Roblox released its first game, called Roblox Studio, to the general public. Roblox Studio allowed users to create their own games in the digital programming language Lua.
