Shortly after this new settlement, the tensions between the new inhabitants and the Natives were very mixed. The Natives were comprised of over 30 different tribes and a majority of those tribes were very unwelcoming of the new arrivals. On top of the deaths caused by disease and famine, some natives were actively trying to kill the colonists. So much so, that the colonist wouldn't even go outside. On the bright side, the leader of the natives, Chief Powhatan, would send food and supplies to the colonists. Despite the kind gestures, some Natives would still attack the colonist, and even kidnap them. One colonist, who was kidnapped by the name of John Rolfe, was saved from being executed by the Chief's daughter, Pocahontas. Rolfe returned back to the settlement and during that time was named President of the Colony. Pocahontas was captured and held at ransom by the settlers and during that time she adopted their Christian culture and learned the English language. The terms of the ransom were just have peace between the settlers and the natives. The Chief has agreed to the terms however, during her time around the settlers, Pocahontas had fallen in love with John Rolfe. With the surprising approval of the Chief, Rolfe had married Pocahontas, thus easing tensions between the natives and the settlers. Or so they thought....
