AutoCAD history
At the time of its inception in 1982, CAD was a niche product, primarily for mechanical and architectural drafting. In the 1980s, after many years of consolidation and stagnation, the field began a new period of rapid growth, aided by the wide availability of microcomputers and the increasing use of CAD in the manufacturing sector.
The original release of AutoCAD was a desktop application, rather than a networked program. Since CAD is most widely used in design studios, CAD operators, also called drafters, were initially distributed among several sites. To solve the distributed drafter problem, Autodesk introduced a system called Autodesk NetGuide, which provided a centralized user interface and file backup on one or more centrally located mainframe computers. Autodesk NetGuide was eventually replaced by Autodesk Design Network, a peer-to-peer computing model.
AutoCAD continued to be developed, both for the desktop and for personal computers with limited memory and display capability. The term "AutoCAD" typically refers to a modern software version (since the original 1982 release) with enhanced features and tools.
A key milestone in AutoCAD's development was the 1989 release of the first version of AutoCAD for personal computers. The PC version was a DOS-based program that included the AutoCAD drafting environment (separate from the graphics engine) and the newly introduced AutoCAD for Windows, a user interface designed for windows. The version of AutoCAD for Windows was based on the X Window System and the  graphics package was called the Graphics Environment Manager (GEM).
Despite these advances, the PC version of AutoCAD for Windows required a relatively expensive workstation with a very limited local storage capacity. The PC version of AutoCAD was also relatively slow compared to its microcomputer-based counterpart. The first AutoCAD for PC users were primarily architectural drafters who wanted to work at a slower pace, on a relatively inexpensive computer. The basic unit of work, called a drawing, was so large that they used as few tools as possible to get the job done.
This user interface was gradually refined and eventually became the standard user interface for AutoCAD, as well as many other programs. Most users of a CAD program today use the desktop version of the software.

In 2012, Autodesk acquired the EDA Automation (EDA) division of Mentor Graphics, for $336 million.
In addition to the existing EDA software, the division offers hardware products which include the EDA 2025 Express, EDA 2040 Series, and EDA 2200 Series embedded processors. EDA also offers software products for semiconductor design and analysis including the CD-Aware, CD-Aware C++, ARCADIA, ChannelWave, DesignWare, DesignWare Q, GTINIQ, Integrity, nLIST, nSRP, EDAscope, EDAscopePlus, ElementSpy, Verinu, Voltaire, VOLTRON, mTV, VERA, Visalia, VISICAD, ZEOPLUS, EPASS-COMP, EPASS-NOCOMP, EPASS-COMP, EPASS-NOCOMP, EPASS-COMP, and EPASS-NOCOMP.
In 2017, Autodesk announced that EDA Automation was rebranded Autodesk EDA.

Autodesk has built a real-time 3D printing system which supports all major 3D printing technologies including PolyJet, FDM, SLA and SLS.
Autodesk Fusion 360 is a software designed to construct 3D models and animations. Its functionality overlaps with that of Maya and Cinema 4D. Autodesk Fusion 360 is a free version, however, premium versions are available for purchase which come bundled with Autodesk's professional tools. The free version is limited to 90 days of use. The free version includes Autodesk's cloud-based collaborative service for designers and developers.
Autodesk offers a number of integrated cloud-based applications. Autodesk On-Demand is an online application for cloud-based software as a service. Included with the On-Demand application is Autodesk's cloud-based 3D modeling and animation application, Fusion 360. It provides both free and paid subscription options. A higher tier allows more CPU power for processing.
Autodesk VRED allows designers to model in VR, then generate virtual prototypes of their creations. The design-space building tool allows the user to check their designs against the built-in physical layout of the tool.
