History
The early 1980s saw a revolution in CAD. CAD programs emerged on the desktop, eventually making their way to the office, with little or no change in the initial CAD user interface or the basic drawing tools. Many of these early CAD products were developed by DEC on its own desktop computers.
Designed by Ken Wayne, CADMOS (Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing Operating System), was released in 1981 for the DEC Rainbow 100, DEC Rainbow 120, and DEC Rainbow 150. CADMOS, which was the first commercially available CAD, did not have a mouse or a pointing device. Although CADMOS was based on the PDP-10 operating system, it was written in a dialect of Fortran called PL1. Instead of a mouse or pointing device, CADMOS used a trackball mounted on the keyboard. The user could control the drawing environment by pressing different keys on the keyboard and the trackball.
Due to the CADMOS limitations, users were often unaware of the state of the drawing they were working on or where their current cursor was located in the file. Any user interaction with a file required manual scrolling of the mouse's position, and the drawing could only be scrolled up or down within the file.
AutoCAD's predecessor, AutoCADm, was a Fortran app that was released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers. The user had to select different drawing tools, using keys on the keyboard, and then press a mouse button to start drawing a new line. The user did not interact with the drawing file directly, and had to rely on scrolling through the entire drawing file with the mouse.
AutoCAD (and AutoCADm) were developed by Ed Simon at AT&T's Harris Computer Systems Division in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. Simon came to AT&T when he left the MIT CAD Laboratory in 1969. Before developing AutoCAD, Simon worked on the MICROCAD program and on the DEC Rainbow computers.
AutoCAD's first Macintosh release was in 1984, when the company was known as Sage Graphics. Sage Graphics developed its own version of AutoCAD that they called AutoCAD for the Macintosh. The software ran under the Macintosh Operating System (which was later replaced by Mac OS), and had a mouse, a keypad, and a scroll wheel. Functional icons 
An icon is used in AutoCAD to represent a user function, tool or an object. In AutoCAD 2010 the icons are grouped into four general categories: Construction, Interact, Simulation, and Print.
Conversion symbols
An annotation of a symbol means its visibility or its automatic visibility. Such annotation is not visible by default. There are more than hundred different symbols used in AutoCAD 2010. In AutoCAD, there are conversion symbols, such as MOV to MOVED, MOV to MOVING, MOVED to LAYOUT or XREF to MOVED, MOVED to PATTERN etc. In addition, there are conversion symbols for the symbology, such as MOV to BOUNDARY, bounding box to BOUNDARY, edge to BOUNDARY.
Transform symbols
Transform symbols are used to change the units of an object. For example,  can be used to set the height of a line object to the units of inches,  to centimeters,  to the unit of millimeters etc.
Group symbols

Callout symbols
A callout is a section of the drawing that contains information in a three-dimensional shape, often referred to as a block, polyblock, shape block or polyshape block. Callouts are a subset of the symbol library and can be linked to any object. One of the most common callout symbols is the. Object symbols are used to create objects in the drawing.
