2. Description of the Related Art
Recording media are generally classified as read only recording media and recordable or rewritable recording media. Such recording media are normally stored in recording medium cartridges, and the user loads them in a recording/reproducing apparatus. A recent trend in the field of optical recording media is to provide the same recording/reproducing apparatus with both a read only optical disc drive for read only optical discs and a rewritable optical disc drive for rewritable optical discs. Thereby, the user can easily and conveniently use these recording/reproducing apparatuses.
Optical discs are widely used as a storage medium because they are capable of recording large amounts of data with high density and are high-speed data access devices. Optical discs can be further classified as compact discs (CDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs). CDs and DVDs can be used as read only discs, and also have a recording/reproducing apparatus therewith incorporated. Such optical discs can further be classified as compact disc recordable (CD-R) discs and digital versatile disc recordable (DVD-R) discs.
In the following, description will be made of data recorded on a general optical disc for reference.
FIG. 1 schematically shows a basic structure of a general optical disc having a track and a sector. In the figure, reference numeral 1 represents tracks, and 2 represents sectors. One track is divided into a lead-in area, a data area, and a lead-out area, which are sequentially recorded from the inner side to the outer side. The lead-in area is the area where a disc manufacturer stores information to describe the size of a data area. The lead-in area is further divided into a frame identification (ID) area, a disc descriptor (DD) area, a jump manager (JM) area, and a program chain (PGC) area.
