AutoCAD was originally developed by Microworks Inc., but was purchased by Autodesk in 1998. The latest release of AutoCAD was AutoCAD 2009, which was released in August 2009. When Microworks acquired the rights to AutoCAD, it was with the intent of keeping Autodesk's engineering and design tools separate from AutoCAD's industrial strength productivity applications. AutoCAD has been fully supported on Windows and Macintosh operating systems since the program's inception, but because the company originally had financial limitations, it could not afford to develop a workstation capable of running AutoCAD. To keep the software inexpensive for first-time users, it was a simplified version of AutoCAD which could run on older computers or DOS-based PCs. AutoCAD LT was primarily developed to be installed on the more affordable computers with less demanding workstations.
