This article discusses AutoCAD and its history, it's product function, uses, and cost. This article is not a tutorial on how to use AutoCAD; rather, it's a look into what AutoCAD is, how it works, and how it was created.
AutoCAD History
Autodesk was founded in May 1982 by Karl Moore and Greg Hildebrand. Autodesk was originally a division of Palo Alto-based Stanford Research Systems (SRS) that was primarily concerned with development of a mathematical programming language, called S-PLAN. Karl and Greg left SRS to found Autodesk as the Autodesk division of SRS and the first commercial computer-aided design (CAD) program was born. The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1983 and debuted with the names "AutoCAD" and "AutoGraphics", but is now known only as AutoCAD.
AutoCAD’s first product market was drafting software for microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. AutoCAD was the first CAD program that could handle geometric models for assembling or furniture design. It was the first product to allow users to import and manipulate models in 3-D space. These features were revolutionary for the early microcomputer CAD market.
As a result of its pioneering work in CAD, AutoCAD was the first commercial product to combine features that had previously been separate products, such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and engineering software. With AutoCAD, users could edit the same model from multiple perspectives and incorporate the modeling tools to create them.
Over the years, AutoCAD has continued to evolve. The early versions were released for Apple II, IBM PC-compatible, and Macintosh personal computers.
AutoCAD 2016 was released in late 2015 as a major update and rebranding of AutoCAD and is the latest release in the series. AutoCAD is now available in desktop and mobile formats.

In addition to the history of AutoCAD above, I’ve included below an overview of the history of Autodesk as a company and a look at the history of AutoCAD.
Early Years (1982 – 1988)
Karl Moore and Greg Hildebrand founded Autodesk in 1982. The company’s first product was an image conversion product called "Softimage".

In order to enable software developers to import model data from other software, an ObjectARX Interface is provided for the purposes of importing and exporting model data between applications. An example is to be able to import components from a 3D modeler into AutoCAD. AutoCAD stores model information in a series of files. The model information consists of:
Primitive information: Objects.
Attribute information: The shape of an object or its attributes such as height, width, depth.
Geometry information: Any geometric features, including those defined by lines, arcs, curves or surfaces.
The external interface that developers use to access and manipulate model data is called the Model External Interface (MEI). It is a protocol to allow access to model information from other applications and from within applications. 
The key information used to create a model is a keypoint file. The AutoLISP file created by AutoCAD allows access to any keypoint file, and a number of variables are available for storing the properties of each keypoint file. Examples of available keypoint file properties are:
 Keypoint file: The physical model.
 Text string: A textual description of the keypoint file. This is stored by the AutoCAD application and can be used to identify the keypoint file.
 Keypoint index: A number used to identify the keypoint file.
 Dimensional tag: A textual description of the keypoint file, this is stored by the AutoCAD application and can be used to identify the keypoint file.
 Layer tag: A number used to identify the keypoint file.
Model External Interface
The MEI allows access to the model data within AutoCAD. In order to do this a series of classes are used to represent a model. These classes are referred to as MEI interface classes.  The specification of the MEI is achieved by a series of files, which are then used to create a structure called a Model External Interface (MEI) specification file. Once the specification is created, the file is used to create a series of ADT files. ADT files are used to represent the actual model and can contain a number of properties, such as:
Model: The geometric model of the object.
Text string: A textual description of the model.
