The name AutoCAD is derived from the initials of the Latin phrase computer-aided design, which became the source of the phrase computer-aided design/drafting (CAD/CAM). AutoCAD is available for the Apple Macintosh platform, Windows, macOS, iOS, Linux, and web, and is available for MacOS and Windows on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.
The software was originally developed and distributed by AutoDesk Inc., now part of Autodesk, which also developed the original AutoCAD software as well as the TopoStar topographic surveying product. The software is still developed, maintained, and supported by Autodesk.
The primary focus of this document is to provide an overview of the AutoCAD software application.
