User interface 
AutoCAD changes its user interface over time. However, a basic design across AutoCAD products are the Main screen, a sketch window and the drawing area (a drawing box). AutoCAD's user interface consists of four areas:
Sketch window 
Main screen 
The sketch window allows creating a drawing from scratch. It also allows creation of a number of graphics, including AutoCAD's native 2D drafting units (DWG Units) and AutoCAD's drawing objects (dwg objects).
Main screen 
The Main screen allows for viewing, editing, and displaying information about the drawing, some of which are unique to the drawing itself, such as the drawing's title, length and area. The drawing itself is displayed in the drawing area, which contains two dimensions: the x- and y-axes and the cross-hair cursor (a red dot with an arrowhead pointing to the bottom left corner). The drawing area also contains the layer properties window and the "wireframe" option for two-dimensional drawings (but not for three-dimensional drawings).
Along the top of the screen is a menu bar, which contains the undo, redo and zoom buttons, which are used to control the drawing and its dimensions.
Keyboard shortcuts
Many keyboard shortcuts can be used to create or modify a drawing in AutoCAD. The mouse pointer changes from the drawing area to a hand icon when the mouse is moved. Clicking the hand icon allows the user to move the cursor up, down, left or right on the screen. There are also different screen mappings for the keyboard commands.
