Malcolm X's Ballot or the Bullet? speech & biography:
Delivered in 1964, Malcolm X's speech represents the militant, firebrand nature of Malcolm X's approach to gaining civil rights and justice for African-American people that had long been denied very basic civil rights.  In his speech Malcolm X delivers the ultimatum that if rights continue to be denied, that violence will be an inevitable consequence of this.

Objectives:
Student Activity #1: 
Students will be able to establish the role logos, ethos, and pathos play in either Martin Luther King's I Have a Dream Speech, or in Malcolm X's Ballot or the Bullet speech using a minimum of two in-text citations for each rhetorical device with a minimum of 75% accuracy.
Student Activity #1: What to Expect:
Working in small groups students will analyze either Martin Luther King's or Malcolm X's speech for examples of rhetorical devices, logos, ethos and pathos. The guiding question for students within these groups is how both civil rights leaders use these rhetorical devices in drastically different ways: how does Martin Luther King use rhetoric to appeal to a different audience and espouse different ideas than Malcolm X does? How does Martin Luther King Jr's vision differ from that of Malcolm X, are there similarities?
