In late 2007, AutoCAD Product Key LT (now just "AutoCAD") and AutoCAD Map 3D were combined to form AutoCAD Architecture. Also in 2007, the Professional version of AutoCAD was renamed to AutoCAD Civil 3D, followed by a major upgrade to AutoCAD Civil 3D R20 in 2010. In the fall of 2011, AutoCAD was renamed to AutoCAD, which now stands as the primary name of the product.

AutoCAD was first developed in 1981 by Gary Bradski and Bryan Stokes at the Autodesk Corporation in Santa Cruz, California. It was originally called AutoCAD Extended, but was renamed to AutoCAD in 1982.
The first version of AutoCAD had only four commands (select, move, rotate, and draw), and could only draw lines, circles, and 2D polylines. It was originally developed to be a text-based program for use in home offices. It would not be until the mid-1980s that the users were able to use 3D modeling and 2D drafting. It was first released on September 16, 1982, for use with the Apple II series of computers running the Discreet Visualizer operating system. AutoCAD is also compatible with the DOS operating system.
In 1992, the first version of AutoCAD was released for Microsoft Windows, and in 1994, Microsoft Windows 3.1 was released, adding AutoCAD to the list of products that can be run on it.
When the company was sold to the German company SAP AG in 1998, the name was changed to AutoCAD Software for Civil & Architectural Engineers. In 2002, the product name was changed to the current, much-simplified name, "AutoCAD".
In May 2011, Autodesk announced AutoCAD LT as a cheaper substitute for AutoCAD, which would reduce the price of AutoCAD to US$500. The last update to AutoCAD LT came in 2012, and version 2013 was released in June 2013.
In April 2013, Autodesk announced the addition of two new applications to the AutoCAD family: AutoCAD Architecture and AutoCAD Map 3D. AutoCAD Architecture is a replacement for AutoCAD LT, and will be priced at US$600. AutoCAD Map 3D is a more advanced mapping application.

The ants, called carpenter ants, have been killing their fellow insects in large numbers.
Carpenter ants typically only eat other ants that are the same species. However, they can attack any insect they meet, usually consuming them in 10 minutes or less.
Many New Mexicans have noticed the increase in the number of carpenter ants over the past few years. Now, the phenomenon is being treated as an environmental crisis by the federal government.
Researchers with the United States Forest Service’s Northern New Mexico Research Center are working with university scientists from several different institutions to determine why carpenter ants are proliferating so quickly in this part of the country.
The scientists are also hoping to determine if the ants are feeding on the plants in the forests, or are they merely consuming any insects they encounter.
The ants are being treated as a potential health risk because they can carry a few diseases, including the potentially fatal White-nose syndrome. The disease is a fungus that causes bats to fall ill, which then leads to the death of those bats.
The research is being funded by the U.S. Forest Service and several private companies.
