An idea first discussed in 1959 at MIT, the paradigm of visual and spatial design was realized with AutoCAD and other AutoDesk software products. The beginnings
In 1959, as a student at MIT, George Dyson worked with John McCarthy to envision the possibility of "automatic drawing." The pair realized that a new paradigm would emerge from the combination of their interests in cybernetics, artificial intelligence, and human-computer interfaces.
At the time, most 2D drawing tools were based on "pixel-perfect" raster image processing. In response to that, McCarthy and Dyson decided to develop an algorithm that would be "less tied to the pixel grid of the computer screen." With the concept of an infinite grid, McCarthy and Dyson envisioned a method for visualizing and placing pieces of a 2D shape onto the grid, each piece of the shape being represented by a 2D object. A "cursor" would be moved around the 2D shape and each move would generate a corresponding action in the computer, such as putting a line, circle, or polyline to the corresponding pixel grid location on the 2D shape. Their initial work resulted in a robot system that could draw on paper with a pen-like stylus. In the late 1960s, Dyson and McCarthy began to further develop their ideas on a piece of paper at MIT. The piece of paper became a 36" × 96" original proof sheet for the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) contract that became the basis for the early implementation of the "expert system." The paper became known as the Dyson-McCarthy drawing board.
Dyson left MIT in 1969. McCarthy continued to work on his drawings in the Research Laboratory of Electronics (RLE) at MIT. In 1970, the RLE Research Laboratory was responsible for developing the original AutoCAD software that is still in use today. In 1971, the government dropped the RLE's "operating system" contract because its software could not be delivered on time. The AutoCAD source code was developed in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT.
