History
Background
AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, and AutoCAD Architecture were developed by John Walker in 1981. AutoCAD was designed for engineers and architects, with functionality similar to existing drafting programs such as Dymaxion, and came with a drawing, layout, and plotting library. The layout feature, which has since been incorporated into every version of AutoCAD, was introduced in AutoCAD II.
The early AutoCAD application was designed to run on PCs with the use of Autodesk's own Application Program Interface (API) which was based on the X-Windows system. Users would log in to the software via a graphical user interface (GUI), which is a graphic display with icons or widgets on a desktop. They would then design or draft a file with the AutoCAD application's functions. After editing the file, it could be printed or sent to a plotter. When the user closed the file, the data was written to a disk file, which could be uploaded to a "network node" and shared with other users.
When the first version of AutoCAD was released in December 1982, it was a desktop app with a separate plotter, and used the X-Windows graphical user interface. After the initial release, AutoCAD had the ability to directly work with AutoCAD drafting formats and can read and write the Platsenitor/AutoCAD format, used in many European countries. The first version of AutoCAD also worked with the Pascal/Turbo Pascal language.
In 1983, Autodesk released AutoCAD as a standalone operating system that could work with the GUI interface. In the 1980s, the use of Postscript printing had become commonplace and so the plotting system was changed to plot using an X11/Postscript interface. A year later, in 1984, the API was replaced with the Graphical Development Environment (GDE) and AutoCAD could now be run as a stand-alone app (initially with the DOS, RSX-11, and RISC OS operating systems).
