Autodesk launched AutoCAD in 1982 as a drawing package that made the design process simple and fast. Its name, an abbreviation of Auto Computer-Aided Design, is intended to communicate its status as a software application. AutoCAD draws and edits geometrical shapes, and can add and edit text and labels.
Other computer-aided design (CAD) packages of the 1980s included Computer-Aided Design (CAD), designed and developed by PTC and later acquired by Synertek; Delrina, developed by SPSS; Autocad, a version developed by Autodesk for the Atari personal computer (Atari 8-bit series), and later also available on the Apple II, Commodore 64, and TI graphing calculator; and DGN, developed by Unisys and later acquired by Bentley Systems.
An interesting competition took place in the early 1980s, where Autodesk, Synertek and Unisys (via Bentley) competed with Aldus, Canon, Calcomp, Dia, HP, PCJr, Smart Art, and others to sell CAD software for the home computer platform.
Introduced in 1986, AutoCAD Architecture (originally called Autodesk CAD Architecture) was the first version of AutoCAD for architectural design. Autodesk claims it is the most widely used software package for architectural design and analysis. Autodesk continues to develop AutoCAD Architecture in support of the architectural industry.
In 1987, the first version of AutoCAD for mechanical design was released, followed by Release 5 (Revise 5) in 1989. (In its early years, AutoCAD ran on the classic CP/M operating system, while its successor, AutoCAD LT, ran on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh.) In 1992, the release AutoCAD 1993 (Revise 3), followed by AutoCAD 1993 Architecture (Revise 3) in 1993. Then came AutoCAD 1993 Feature Pack (Revise 5) in 1994.
AutoCAD began as a single program, although it has been split into many different parts and applications since then. Epidural morphine has been shown to be more effective than intravenous morphine in the relief of pain after major orthopedic surgery. Epidural analgesia was studied in 13 male patients undergoing transperineal prostatectomy. The patients were randomized to receive an initial dose of 0.15 mg/kg epidural morphine (n = 6) or 0.25 mg/kg intravenous morphine (n = 7). Additional boluses of 0.05 mg/kg epidural morphine or 0.15 mg/kg intravenous morphine were administered if necessary. During a 4-week follow-up, a patient-controlled analgesia device was available to all patients who requested it. Pain was evaluated by using a verbal rating scale (0 = no pain to 10 = worst pain imaginable). Patients received both epidural and intravenous morphine after their procedure. After 2 weeks of therapy, pain relief was significantly better with epidural morphine (0.0 +/- 0.6) than with intravenous morphine (3.0 +/- 1.8).
