The AutoCAD user interface is primarily made up of two panes: the status bar or ribbon toolbar, and the drawing area. In addition to tools which edit geometry directly, such as Locate, Extend and Align, AutoCAD can be used to perform numerous specialized functions by manipulating more abstract objects, such as blocks and sheets, using commands which are not directly editable by users.
AutoCAD features a workbench (the main drawing area), and a user interface (ribbon) bar (Status Bar) that serves as a starting point for the typical user. The user may choose to interact with the workbench directly or use the ribbon. The ribbon contains the most commonly used drawing tools such as Move, Rotate, Extent, and Plot. A typical user will only need to use the ribbon for simple or repetitive tasks and will usually work in the workbench, which holds the context in which the drawing can be completed. AutoCAD can be used to create, edit, and modify a wide range of geometric and non-geometric objects. A user might be able to customize the ribbon using scripting or VBA (Visual Basic for Applications).
A basic project is used to demonstrate the capabilities of AutoCAD. The basic project is a rectangular building made up of a shell and a series of columns. A line of sight is created between the building and a set of distant hills.
Using the ribbon, the user creates a new drawing by selecting the New command. The new drawing opens, and a canvas is cleared of existing objects and is ready for use.
The user then creates a line (by clicking the Line tool button), and then places the line in a location where it intersects the line of sight. The user now wants to make the line a continuation of the line of sight, so the user clicks the Line on the Lines button.
The drawing is now ready to be converted into a picture.
The user creates a picture by selecting the Picture Tools icon. The Picture Tools menu is on the Status Bar, and the button for a selected tool is highlighted. The user clicks the button for the desired tool (usually the default for that tool). For example, if the user chooses the Line button, the user is then brought to the Line Tool Options dialog box.
