The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the values of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-10 (IL-10), D-dimers (D2), copeptin (COP), 1+ albumin, 1+ total protein, retinol-binding protein (RBP), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in the blood for early assessment of the patient's status after major colorectal surgery. We also evaluated the relationship between the concentration of the above-mentioned proteins and the patient's condition. The subjects were 78 patients undergoing major colorectal surgery. Preoperatively the levels of IL-6, IL-10, D2, COP, albumin, total protein, RBP, and CRP were measured and then at 1, 3, 6, and 12 hours and 24 hours after surgery. The patient condition was assessed by the hospital discharge form. The mean hospital stay for the patients was 15.2 +/- 2.6 days and it was 14.3 +/- 4.3 days for the patients with IL-6 > 8.4 pg/ml (p = 0.042). The mean albumin level on the 1st and 3rd postoperative days was significantly lower when compared to the preoperative values in the patient groups with IL-6 > 8.4 pg/ml (p = 0.001, p = 0.001) and COP > 0.12 ng/ml (p = 0.034, p = 0.001), respectively.
