History
AutoCAD is a descendant of the Grafmatic drafting system developed at the University of Waterloo in the early 1970s. Grafmatic could perform both 2-D and 3-D drafting tasks. The software was first marketed as an interactive 3-D CAD system. However, since there was no dedicated computer hardware, Grafmatic could not offer dynamic collaboration and therefore was designed more as a single-user environment, running on a mainframe computer.
In 1981, Ithaka S+R developed AutoCAD, initially for a specialized purpose: it could be used to create 3-D mechanical parts. The first version of AutoCAD was simply a 2-D drafting program. In the early 1980s, the hardware necessary to make 3-D drawings was too expensive for AutoCAD to be considered for general use. When this development began, the principal limitation was that the graphics processor was optimized for 2-D drafting and was not fast enough to draw a 3-D object.
In 1982, Max Meyer joined the company, working on new products such as data transfer and display systems, and on the new AutoCAD as well. He realized that the AutoCAD system would be useful for both 2-D and 3-D drafting. In November 1982, Autodesk introduced a two-user version of AutoCAD, which included both 2-D drafting and 3-D drafting. At that time, only the mainframe version was available.
