Roblox Corporation was founded in June 2004 by Rob Jones, David Baszucki, and Erik Cassel. Their first game, MOBBLE, was coded in C++, and it was released for Nokia N-Gage in November 2004. Their second game, LAPS, was released in April 2005, and it was created using the Java game engine, Libgdx.
Roblox Corporation changed its name to Roblox in October 2004, to emphasize its ability to provide open and creative online games. Rob Jones served as Roblox's CEO during its early years. In November 2005, Roblox released its first original game, SPAWN, which was an online zombie game. During that time, Roblox Corporation became an Inc. 5000 company on its third anniversary and released SPAWN 2, an online space exploration game. Roblox Corporation was sold by David Baszucki in 2007 for  and was purchased by Synchronicity, a subsidiary of Fox Entertainment Group.
In December 2009, Rob Jones left Roblox and was replaced as CEO by Erik Cassel. During the 2010s, Roblox Corporation saw continued growth, with the company developing platform services to make developer work easier, expanding to other gaming platforms, and introducing new games. The company had more than two hundred employees in 2010, and it grew to more than 450 employees by 2017. The number of developers grew to more than four hundred people from early 2013 to early 2014. As of December 2014, it had more than 400 employees. At the end of 2017, the company had 465 employees. The company had more than 8.8 million monthly active users as of August 2019.
