We will be working on independent reading rules and requirements. You might want to ask your child about the books they are reading and what they might be learning. *Please encourage your child to read. Students will responsible for reading and writing the gist of of what they read the night before. Along with the gist the class will frequently be involved in class discussions to hold them accountable for their reading. Please remind your child that reading is extremely important and that they should read every day. All students must have two books with them at all times. One book on their level and one book one level beyond their current independent level. We are currently involved in a Reading and Writing Program called, Ready Gen. This program involves reading and writing in school as well as at home. Your child may have to complete some of the assignments at home because this program addresses many new concepts that are extremely high level. Thank you for your cooperation in assisting me in helping your child learn all of the new Next Generation Learning Standards for fifth grade. Mathematics As most of you are aware, we have been working with the math program, called Go Math. This program is based on all of the Next Generation Learning Standards for fifth grade. Some of the components of the program are extremely difficult, and it might take your child some time to adjust to this program. Please encourage your child to review the new mathematical concepts daily. This will help them grasp the new concepts that they learn the next day in class. Tests are given at the end of each chapter. *Math homework must be completed every day. This is extremely important because many mathematical concepts are related. If your child needs extra assistance please have them let me know.* At this time we will be working on Reviewing Grade 5 Math skills.We are also working on rigorous Math Exemplars. We will work on Math Journals as well as a variety of Next Generation Mathematical skills. The students must review the multiplication tables. Please have your child review all of the skills we are going over in class.Students will have an abundant amount of opportunities to improve their mathematical knowledge through extensions and extra credit assignments. There will also be opportunities to review all work that the students may be having difficulty in. Please encourage them to take advantage of this.Students have been learning basic multiplication facts since third grade, and now it is imperative that they have instant recall of multiplication facts to be successful in this unit and most other units in fifth grade. Please have your child practice flash cards frequently focusing upon facts which are not easily recalled. Additionally, students should be proficient at adding and subtracting numbers having multiple place values and require regrouping.Attention ParentsYou can now log in to Think Central so your child can review various lessons in mathematics. The students have been given User names and passwords in class. Please ask your child about this.This might be a helpful way for your child to practice all mathematical concepts.
