The White House Grounds

The White House Grounds consist of an area of approximately eighteen acres of land surrounding the White House. Used by the president, the first family, and—at times—the public, these grounds are the oldest maintained decorative landscape in the United States. Since the completion of the White House in 1800, however, the grounds have changed significantly. Explore the 200-year history of the White House Grounds through the various efforts of presidents and first ladies to use and enrich the famous outdoor space.
