AutoCAD has been with us for nearly 40 years and is arguably one of the most important technology products in the history of architecture and engineering, specifically in the area of 2D drafting.
AutoCAD was introduced in December 1982 as the first integrated desktop CAD application. It was a product of Architectural Design Group and was published by DynaGraphics Inc. (DGI), a joint venture between Autodesk and DGI. At the time, there were few CAD products available to architects and engineers. The available products included proprietary software, which was typically developed to run on mainframe computers, and generic software developed for minicomputers.

DGI was founded by a group of industry pioneers. One of them was Marc Rando, the first CEO of Autodesk. DGI was initially known as DynaGraphics, and Rando served as the company’s first president and CEO. DGI built its reputation on architecture-focused products such as AutoCAD and its predecessor, AutoCAD-II. In 1982, DGI was awarded the ACIS Award for Most Innovative CAD Product of 1982. In 1985, DGI was acquired by Autodesk.
It was only natural that AutoCAD grew in popularity. In 1982, DynaGraphics projected annual sales of $50 million and an annual growth rate of 30% through 1987. The first AutoCAD was a big success; it introduced CAD technology to the profession.
AutoCAD slowly grew into a powerful CAD suite that was widely used by architects, engineers, and construction professionals. With the release of AutoCAD 3.0 in 1987, DynaGraphics made the technology available to a broader audience
