AutoCAD is a general-purpose computer-aided drafting and design application designed for making technical drawings and has been the de facto standard for the field for over 25 years. The first AutoCAD was released in 1989 as AutoCAD 2.0, and the current version is AutoCAD 2017.
From its inception, AutoCAD has evolved into a drafting tool as well as a CAD system. For example, AutoCAD originally had only 2D capabilities, but in version 2.5 released in 1990, it added the ability to import 2D drawings (originally line drawings, but soon allowing only AutoCAD 2D, although it could still import DWG and DXF files), and, later, to import and export 3D drawings.
