AutoCAD applications allow designers and engineers to work in a virtual world, where they can create their designs and share them with colleagues. They can then access the design from any computer that is connected to the internet. This means that anyone in the design team can work on the same drawing in the same time zone. Anyone can review and comment on the design, adding their own marks and edits to the drawing as it is being developed.

C++ API
Since release 2000, AutoCAD was shipped with native C++ application programming interface (API) and other native libraries. AutoCAD 2002 and 2003 shipped the AutoCAD C++ application programming interface (API) to a set of functions, each of which is described in the AutoCAD 2002 or 2003 Help File. The C++ API has three parts:
 A set of base classes, called the Application Programming Interface (API)
 The Windows Application Interface (API)
 The Autodesk Application Services API (ASAPI).
The main task of the C++ API is to enable an application to operate with AutoCAD files.
Common programming languages
The API of AutoCAD software is designed to allow programmers in a number of different programming languages to create applications using the features of AutoCAD.  For example, Visual Basic and AutoLISP are two programming languages often used in AutoCAD applications. C++ and Delphi are other languages used to develop AutoCAD-based applications. The vast majority of AutoCAD add-on applications are developed in Visual Basic (VB) or C++.
For example, a programmer may create an application to generate pictures or graphics. A programmer could use the C++ API to create an application to do this. Similarly, a programmer may create an application that creates product designs and/or generates presentation slides. A programmer may use Visual Basic to create an application that does this. The applications and other things described here include application programming interface (API) and add-ons. The main task of the add-on application is to extend the functionality of AutoCAD.
Standardized programming
AutoCAD interfaces with various computer operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows. This interface facilitates developing software for the operating system. All of the programming interface classes and methods are standard.
For example, ObjectARX uses standard C/C++ (ISO/ANSI) classes and methods to allow programming within AutoCAD. By creating an object in one class, one can access and modify the data in other classes.
Macros
AutoCAD supports a set of AutoLISP macros and Visual LISP macros. These are used to automate various tasks. For example, macros may be used to draw a particular shape and generate the corresponding DXF file.
