AutoCAD was originally developed by James Gosling as a PostScript-based drawing program, for use by engineers at the Hewlett-Packard Company, now renamed as Autodesk. In 1988, the company was acquired by Silicon Graphics.
It was originally developed in 1987 to replace AutoCAD 76, which was also written in PostScript, as a quick way to create hand-drawn engineering drawings. It was originally released in March 1989, and was marketed towards the AutoCAD R33 release for the Amiga and X86 PC platforms. Version 2 was released in July 1991. An "AutoCAD Builder" plugin was included in the Autodesk Design Guide 2 for UNIX, Windows and Macintosh platforms.
