Origin 
AutoCAD's predecessor, Microstation, was initially developed at Microdata Corporation, a subsidiary of Control Data Corporation (CDC) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1981, in the wake of the 1981 launch of the Apple II home computer, CDC was looking for a product that would capitalize on the new wave of personal computing. The company turned to its Cambridge-based subsidiary, Microdata, and its senior vice president of architecture, T. Scott Forbush, and proposed that Microdata create a client/server architecture for building information modeling (BIM) software. The purpose of this system was to integrate BIM into the corporate architecture.
CDC formally announced Microstation at its annual product launch on September 19, 1981. Two years later, the first version of Microstation was released, but Microdata's technical shortcomings in developing a robust BIM client/server architecture caused Microdata to give up on the project. In May 1983, Microdata asked MOST to develop a second version of Microstation, as Microdata was no longer interested in completing the original project.
In June 1983, MOST developed the original Microstation, which was released in October 1983 as MicroStation 3.0. To ease software management, MOST developed two separate applications, Microstation Workbench and Microstation Viewer, which were linked through the use of a proprietary interface. On October 14, 1983, the product was publicly released, and it was distributed through CDC for $30,000 in development costs, and was available only to CDC customers.
Development of AutoCAD 
In September 1983, CDC and MOST representatives attended an annual user group convention in Annapolis, Maryland. During a presentation, CDC and MOST representatives outlined the concepts behind the proposed BIM software architecture, and how it would differ from other CAD systems available at the time. In the US, a large number of users have little use for an academic version, so they may not purchase it, but the acad versions of the other packages have evolved and evolved, to suit a wider market, with features that are useful to that market.  Some users want a full feature set, some a smaller (and hence cheaper) feature set, and some a even cheaper feature set, so they can get a good deal.
The acad packages are a good comparison. They are more accessible than the pro and premier versions, and they have fewer features.  The explorer and premier packages have a range of features; the explorer versions have fewer but more powerful features.  The pro and premier versions have a wider range of features.  The acad versions are better value for money, but it is usually not worth paying more for the features. The acad versions have the disadvantage of a shorter support life and poorer documentation than the pro and premier versions.
