History
AutoCAD 1981–1992
AutoCAD was originally developed by the developer of the drafting program AutoLISP, founded by Brad Chase in 1981. AutoLISP was an early, extensive example of a functional programming language. Autodesk acquired AutoLISP's commercial rights and partnered with Chase in 1982, on the condition that Autodesk would market the product. In the following years, Autodesk moved the developers to Vancouver, Canada, where the company's office is now located.
The first version of AutoCAD, released in December 1982, included a mouse interface and was available on minicomputers, running on DEC PDP-11s and PDP-11s with DEC MVT Graphics. The first versions of AutoCAD used black and white graphics (in a green screen). Starting in 1986, the color of the screen had expanded, and in 1991, the first versions of AutoCAD were available for personal computers, running on the IBM PC platform and available on shareware. The first commercial versions were released for the Apple Macintosh in 1986, for the Windows platform in 1987, and for the Amiga in 1989.
AutoCAD and other Autodesk programs were initially available for purchase as a boxed software program, priced at $1,995, but AutoCAD quickly became the best-selling CAD program.
The first version of AutoCAD to use an on-screen cursor was AutoCAD 1987, though it was used in earlier versions in industry-standard CAD programs such as DraftingCAD.
