Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. For most of Roblox's history, it was relatively small, both as a platform and a company. Roblox began to grow rapidly in the second half of the 2010s, and this growth has been accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Roblox is free to play, with in-game purchases available through a virtual currency called Robux. As of August 2020, Roblox had over 164 million monthly active users, including more than half of all American children under 16. Although Roblox has received generally positive reviews from critics, it has faced criticism for its moderation, microtransactions, and exploitative practices directed toward children.
Background
=========
In 2004, David Baszucki and Erik Cassel started the company Roblox Corporation. One of their first big projects was a game called Robot Unicorn Attack, which was released on September 7, 2005. An entirely made up movie was loosely based on the game, and released a few months later. The reaction was poor, and they decided to get out of the industry.
In 2006, the pair, along with several others at Roblox, re-entered the industry, and the company was incorporated.
In 2012, after creating their game Drippy the Cow, which was a parody of the idle clicker game Farmville, the team started to realize that the concept of the game was actually very similar to the idle clicker title Mob Wars, a game that also had real-life applications.
In early 2013, Roblox opened their own studio and began work on a new game, called Dinosaurs vs Aliens. The game was awarded the "Beta Game" award by the Beta Thinkers conference at the 2013 SXSW Gaming festival. Dinosaurs vs Aliens was released in June 2013.
In 2013, the game sparked a debate at the Anita Sarkeesian channel on YouTube. Roblox Corp. president and co-founder David Baszucki wrote a letter to the channel expressing concern over the controversy the game had created and stated they were aware of their past violence and racism.
