Making a Difference with Online Learning

"I've been teaching online for more than 10 years and here are 3 things I think can really make a difference, regardless of the technology used or the sync/ async dychotomy. 
Be there. Teacher presence is *the* one thing I would not compromise on. Making your expectations very clear, providing timely constructive feedback, checking in regularly. But also knowing when to step out and trust students to own their learning. 
Be flexible. There is no *one size fits all* way of teaching or learning. What I appreciate about teaching online is that it allows me & my students to explore new ways of doing things. Always have a plan B & plan C ready, you'll need it more often than not. 
Be ready to learn. Being an online educator enabled me to do away with the "sage on the stage" and shape a learning environment where we learn from each other. For real. I would not be the teacher I am today without all I've learned from my students along the way. "
