The original AutoCAD was developed by a team of engineers that began as a new division of the architectural and engineering firm HOK. The first version, AutoCAD 1.0, was released in December 1982 and is considered to be the "classic" version.
In the early 1980s, the state-of-the-art for graphics tools and design software was the use of mainframe or minicomputer computers. At the time, computers were room-size monsters that would take hours to boot up and could store only a few megabytes of data. AutoCAD 2 was released in March 1985. It was the first version to be available in both desktop and server editions.
In 1989, Autodesk released AutoCAD 3, which was the first version available as a standalone software package. This version also included the first version of the Dynamic Input Method Editor (DIME).
AutoCAD 4 came out in February 1990. It had a new feature that would come to be known as Direct Editing.
In September 1991, AutoCAD 5 came out. This version was a milestone because it introduced a mouse-driven program that would start a "revolution" in the software industry.
AutoCAD 6 came out in November 1993. It was the first version to include 3D modeling capabilities.
AutoCAD 7 came out in November 1996. This was the first version to include the ability to view and modify the same drawing with multiple users. This also included a feature that made CAD operations a lot faster, called the improved workgroup feature.
AutoCAD 8 was released in November 1997.
AutoCAD 9 came out in November 1999.
In November 2000, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2000 for the Windows 9x operating systems. It was a Windows-only operating system that featured a new and more intuitive graphical interface.
