Coordinates: 52°4342N 1°4343W 52.728227°N 1.728550°W 52.728227; -1.728550 Memorial, Staffordshire, England The Arboretum National Memorial is a British national memorial in Alrevas, near Litchfield, Staffordshire. Its purpose is to commemorate those who have died, to recognize merit and sacrifice and to encourage pride in the British armed forces and the civilian population. In 2017, the new, award-winning Arboretum Memorial Center was officially opened by the Duke of Cambridge on 23 March following extensive refurbishment. With three new exhibition galleries, a larger restaurant and shop, a separate café and a courtyard garden, it offers visitors an environment in keeping with the main attractions. In 2018, the National Memorial Arboretum was awarded Gold Attraction of the Year at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence and Coach Attraction of the Year at the British Coach Tourism Awards. Origins The idea for the arboretum was developed in 1988 by CBE Commander David Childs, who wanted to create a national hearth or hub to commemorate those who had died after giving back to their community or country. The recall was made in 1994 by then Prime Minister John Major after a meeting with Group Captain Leonard Cheshire VC. He believed that the arboretum would be a living tribute to the men and women who serve so that future generations can reflect and enjoy walking through the beautiful green landscape. The future of the project was secured when three proposals were agreed. These include: the site is to be the site of the Armed Forces Memorial; that the Ministry of Defense will pay a substantial subsidy to allow free entry, and that the Royal British Legion will accept the donation of the site as a focal point for the countrys year-round commemoration. The project started with no money, no land, no staff and no trees, just an idea that still existedexist in reality. The National Lottery, in the form of the Millennium Commission, provided about forty percent of the required funds, along with thousands of donations large and small from many different organizations, military and civilian, male and female, corporate and voluntary. 4 Planting began in the reclaimed gravel pits bordering the rivers Trent and Thames, which Tarmac Lafarge donated to charity in 1997. The first plantations were financed by the Forestry and State Forestry Commission, and since then they have been formed by several thousand workers: a small salaried worker. group; dedicated and active organization Friends of the National Memorial Arboretum; and countless others who planted individual trees or helped create a memorial to their organization. The Arboretum was officially opened on May 16, 2001. It is a registered charity and is part of the Royal British Legion family of charities. Location Aerial view with the River Thames below. The National Memorial Arboretum is located south of Alrewa on approximately 150 acres (61 ha; 0.23 sq mi) of old gravel pits 5 miles (8.0 km) north of Lichfield in Staffordshire. It borders the confluence of the River Thames with the River Trent and is right next to the Croxall Lakes. It is located at the western end of the State Forests, right next to the A38 highway. The landmark Polar Bear Monument was the first monument dedicated at the site on June 7, 1998. The Arboretum has more than 25,000 trees.1 There are more than 400 memorials to the armed forces, civil organizations and voluntary organizations that have played their part for the country; and even Simons cat from HMS Amethyst. Most were the Armed Forces Memorial. At the heart of the Arboretum is the Armed Forces Memorial, which honors more than 16,000 soldiers who have lost their lives in conflict or terrorism since the end of World War II. 11 at 11 oclockevery year the sun shines through two cracks in the outer and inner walls of the monument, casting a shaft of light on the wreath in the middle. The Armed Forces Memorial was unveiled in October 2007 by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the presence of the Queen. Other areas of the site include the RAF wing, the Naval Review and the Military Parade. The civic areas include The Beat, which features memorials and dedications to police forces from across the UK and Commonwealth. There is a 1300 VAD military nurses memorial, and for professional nurses who died in WW1 and WW2, to find them, go to the RAMC memorial. Leaving this and the Polish War Memorial, go up the forest and follow the path by the river, then a little to the left.8 In the arboretum there is the Millennium Chapel of Peace and Forgiveness, where a memorial service is held every day at 11.00. A two-minute silence, accompanied by Last Post and Reveille, is followed by an introductory speech about the arboretum. The Bastion Memorial commemorates the British victims of the War in Afghanistan (2001–2021) 10. The Mara of Lisbon statue opened in 2021. In September 2021, the Royal British Legion opened a remembrance glade at the Arboretum with plants selected for their symbolic meaning associated with sadness and new beginnings. Daily activities on site include guided walks, buggy rides, land train rides and free talks, as well as a daily memorial act. Most of these activities are carried out by a team of over 260 volunteers who collectively dedicate more than 52,000 hours of their time to the Arboretum annually.
