3D AutoCAD R14
In 2014, Autodesk introduced 3D AutoCAD R14. The new feature adds a 3D editor similar to the 2D version and new 2D drawings called stereo diagrams.
AutoCAD LT 2016
With the release of AutoCAD 2016, for the first time, the 2D software made the jump to a third-party executable known as AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD LT 2016 is a complete AutoCAD replacement that includes 2D and 3D modeling, drafting, and other AutoCAD capabilities for users who do not require full AutoCAD functionality. AutoCAD LT's core design functionality consists of a 2D drawing creation and management workspace similar to the 2D software and a native 3D modeling workspace that uses the native or external viewer available in AutoCAD, to allow the user to view and edit 3D drawings and objects in their native 3D environment.
Unlike AutoCAD, the 3D modeling features and capabilities of AutoCAD LT are not yet capable of supporting all AutoCAD feature elements, such as the 'Cube' to show the inside and outside of a 3D geometric object, or the ability to reference any '3D object' and link it to a 2D drawing.
Additionally, although AutoCAD LT's core 2D editing features are similar to those in AutoCAD, they are missing the 2D sheet management features that allow users to track edits on a sheet-by-sheet basis.
Workflows are also different between the two products: AutoCAD is an object-oriented system that provides a user interface around a database of objects. The user starts the modeling process by drawing objects on a 2D surface, and in AutoCAD, the user will usually work in a series of 2D drawing views, each containing a subset of objects. In AutoCAD LT, the user starts the modeling process by creating 3D objects in 3D space and then entering a 2D editing workspace to view and edit those objects, as well as share them with other users.
