As part of an ongoing partnership with Oracle, the University of California, Irvine (UCI) and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) have established a consortium for a new National Supercomputing Center (NSCC) to be called the University of California, Irvine National Supercomputing Center for Education and Research (UCINSCER).
Most of the UCINSCER compute time will be devoted to educational and research projects on application, computer, and human sciences. These projects will be carried out collaboratively within the consortium, and enable our team to bring to completion the first critical shared-computing project for education and the first major shared-computing project for higher education and research.
UCINSCER has developed a plan to accomplish this ambitious goal by investing in high-end technology and providing a campus-wide research infrastructure for biological, physical, social, and computational studies at UCI.
UCI's computational skills foundation involves the installation of advanced computing hardware, software, and networking capacity. The NSCC will be a central component in this foundation, providing the technical infrastructure for a planned research network of computing facilities. Specifically, NSCC will house not only the shared supercomputer at the heart of the NSCC, but also shared research networking and storage facilities, and many other software and hardware resources for scientific applications.
UCI is currently in the process of completing the NSCC's computer facility. The NSCC is scheduled to open in mid-2004, and it will be located on the university's campus and managed by a UCI science division.
UCINSCER is also investing in software. UCINSCER needs a proven, commercially-deployed framework for building software that includes the creation of processes and coordination of software specifications. Therefore, NCI has contracted with SAGE to create a software infrastructure to address this need.
UCINSCER will continue the efforts of UCI, Virginia Tech, and The University of Alabama in Huntsville to compete for the NSF's Grand Challenge Program.
