Early history 
AutoCAD's development was a result of a “joint venture” between the old CAD system that used a PostScript printer called Systems, developed in 1978 by an Australian engineer working for Hewlett-Packard, and Autodesk, a Silicon Valley software development company founded by Robert Nudelman in 1979. Autodesk had previously built custom CAD programs for architects and engineers, but was looking to develop a more general purpose CAD application that could work for any organization and any product.
In 1981, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD. Called AutoCAD-1, the new CAD application was an upgrade from Systems that used the PostScript printer language and used the Hewlett-Packard HP-2600 minicomputer. By the mid 1980s, as users demanded that CAD applications became faster, smaller, and more powerful, Autodesk designed AutoCAD-2, their first production CAD package that was 10 times smaller, 40 times faster, and four times as powerful as its predecessor.
AutoCAD 3 
AutoCAD was upgraded to AutoCAD 3 in 1990. The release of AutoCAD 3 made CAD applications more affordable to smaller companies, as the software was designed to run on any machine with a 32-bit RISC microprocessor. As a result of this, AutoCAD became the standard CAD software for the production of graphical displays for companies such as BellSouth and AT&T. AutoCAD 3 was also used to create the graphical layout of the original World Wide Web.
As a result of the decline in the use of minicomputers and other hardware for creating graphical displays and AutoCAD 3's smaller size and faster performance, Autodesk started to develop AutoCAD as a web application. By releasing AutoCAD 2007, Autodesk discontinued support for AutoCAD 3 and did not provide updates for AutoCAD 3. However, both the Windows and Mac versions of AutoCAD continue to receive updates.
AutoCAD LT 
AutoCAD LT, the basic CAD package, was first released in 1990 as AutoCAD 3.5. It was designed to run on 64-bit PCs running Windows 95 or Windows NT 4.0.
AutoCAD LT was the successor to Systems, which had also been designed by Robert Nudelman. It was based on a smaller, faster version of the HP-2600
