World War 1 was such a massively destructive and mechanised war that people had never seen befre.
When the war broke out, people were enthusiastic to join the fight. 
Scotland's militery statues as part of the British Empire was well established for the time. They were seen as hardy front-line troops. 
Most Scots that signed up for the army were young and wanted to be with their friends, families and other members of their community to fight alongside in the fight.
Lots of families back home became fatherless due to so many Scottish troops dying in single battles. 
Scotland provided more men in proportion to population than any other part of Britain. 
Scotland had a very powerful industrial sector during WW1. 
The Clydeside was considered in the early 20th centuary as the 'workshop of the world'. 
Shipyards, engineering shops and metal plants were put on high demand to produce munitions throughout the war. 
The population in the western central belt of Scotland was fastly growing as industrial workers from around Britain travelled to Glasgow to work in its factories. 
Most of Glasgow's working-class residents were living in cramped and inadequate conditions. 
Scotland was becoming over-dependent as Britain's heavy industrial provider. 
Although socialism was becoming popular in Scotland since the start of the 20th century, there wasn't any strong socialist representation in Parliarment. 
Most of Scotland's working-class people were not entitled to vote. The ones that could had to be skilled and they usually stayed loyal to the Liberal Party. This resulted in many Scots feeling unrepresented.
The Prime Minister at the time, Lloyd George distrusted Socialist and Union groups from the Clydeside as he viewed them as harmful to the war effort.
Home Rule had been a major political issue since the 1880s. 
Due to how greedy landlords were becoming, a popular protest was organised by Clydeside workers in 1915. This protest was called the Glasgow Rent Strike. It was supported by unionists, the Labour Party and left-wing suffragettes. The Liberal Party reluctantly supported it as they only wanted to avoid civil unrest and to prevent long lasting disruptions to the production of munitions.
Many Scots applied membership for the Indepentant Labour Party during the war.
In the 1922 General Election, Labour became the largest party in Scotland, with 29 of its MPs leaving Glasgow to represent in Westminster. 
Most middle-class Scots supported the Unionist Party that was considered right-wing. The reason may have been caused by the events of the Russian Revolution. 
The Great Depression significantly affected the Scottish ecomony.
Glasgow soon developed a bad characteristic reputation for its mass unemployment, sub-standered housing and poor public health.
