Based on Brad Bird's screenplay for the 2007 Pixar film Ratatouille, the film centers on Remy, a con artist aspiring to be a Master Chef and his rat companion Linguini, as they navigate through the Paris's kitchens in order to infiltrate a secret organization and obtain a priceless secret ingredient. At the time of its release, the film was the first Pixar production without Bird on the screenwriter's seat, with Michael Arndt taking over for him. Its score was composed by Jan A. P. Kaczmarek and feature songs by Robert Lopez. Brave was released in the United States on June 22, 2012, in 3D and IMAX 3D. A sequel, Brave 2, is scheduled for release on June 22, 2020.
With Brave, Pixar continued its tradition of animated films that "are not only extremely entertaining but also leave their audience with a strong sense of emotional satisfaction and social responsibility." The film earned over $381 million at the box office.

Plot
The film opens with a flashback on Paris, circa 850 CE, which details a peasant girl named Merida, whose beauty turns men and women against each other. When Merida's mother is kidnapped, she is chased by the men in her village, only to have them fight over her. The men attack the young girl. A town guard arrives to quell the riot and protects her from the men, asking her to marry him. After refusing, Merida, who is not actually frightened by the town guard, agrees to marry the local lord. The wedding celebration is interrupted when the girl's mother is kidnapped, and in retaliation, Merida steals an apple from the table and sets out into the woods. After that she encounters her Mother's spirit and sacrifices the apple for her Mother's soul. The angry spirit sends a curse, which will punish Merida's descendants for ten generations and destroys her family forever.
Remy, a young cook who serves as the main protagonist of the film, dreams of becoming a Master Chef and seeking adventure. He lives with his parents in the town of Igo, France, and dreams of becoming a Master Chef. Though he has an extremely optimistic attitude, his realist friend and mentor, Gusteau, tells Remy that he is not cut out for cooking.
