AutoCAD's automation capabilities have been enhanced with the release of AutoCAD 2010.  Developers can create their own application components (API), register them in the registry and use them from inside other applications.  This ability has been expanded to include Windows developers as well.
AutoCAD 2011 introduced an API for writing VBA macros and later introduced VBA support for creating macros.  While AutoCAD 2012 introduced a large set of custom buttons and options via custom toolbar dialogs, VBA support for custom toolbar dialogs was retained in AutoCAD 2013. AutoCAD 2014 introduced the capability for third-party applications to define custom user interface controls through the application manifest. AutoCAD 2015 introduced a module-based API that offers developers a number of programmatic options and ways to interact with the 3D environment.
 Mac OS X 
AutoCAD for Mac supports a similar API to that of AutoCAD on Windows, and is the basis for several other 3D modeling software such as SketchUp, Rhino, and SketchUp Viewer.
AutoCAD for Mac has supported the runtime installation of add-on applications for many years. These add-on applications consist of VBA macro modules, which can be used for macro programming, similar to the way macros can be programmed in AutoCAD. In the Windows edition, however, only.NET macros are available. In AutoCAD for Mac 2011, Microsoft Visual Studio Express Edition for Windows could be used to develop VBA macros. In the 2015 release, Visual Studio could be used as the development environment. AutoCAD for Mac 2016 added Visual Studio 2017 as the development environment. AutoCAD for Mac can open and view 3D models in its native 3D space. It also has a docking window on the right side that can be used to access AutoCAD's software components (add-ons, programs) as well as the Mac OS X operating system and Windows.

On July 27, 2012, Autodesk launched the AutoCAD Mobile App for Android for the first time. The app was first made available on the Google Play store.
