Regardless of whichever speaking style you will be using, you must devote time to prepare your speech (yes, even in an impromptu setup). Namely, I can think of three things that you should prepare in your speaking engagements:
Prepare your speech
The easiest way to prepare a speech is the same as what your English teacher taught you in making an essay—that is having an introduction, body, and a conclusion.
Your speech must have a introduction that hooks or captures the audience's interest such as using a quote, a story, a factoid, or an ice breaker. It can also orient the audience on what they will expect throughout the speech such as giving a brief outline of the presentation or the main point of your speech.
The body of your speech must be organized. There are various ways to organize the body of your speech such as arranging points chronologically or by topic. As time is an important resource, a great rule of thumb is to limit the body of your speech to only three to four main points, hence the need of organizing your speech which are the main topics, subtopics, and support material.
Lastly, you must give a proper conclusion to your speech. You can conclude by summarizing your key ideas or reinforce your central idea with either a quote or a challenge. Just as we love a great ending to a movie, novel, or song, a strong ending that brings your speech full circle is always loved by the audience.
In addition, your entire speech must be properly organized, connected, and cohesive. Make sure to use the proper transitional devices as so you and the audience can easily follow along with what you are saying.
