AutoCAD began as a desktop app, but by 2006 it had evolved into an integrated suite of applications, a combination of AutoCAD and ancillary applications and utilities, such as the DWG Translator for InDesign, that could be used to model and produce drawings, sections, prints, and other graphics. The AutoCAD product line now includes several other desktop apps, a set of online apps, and a specialized mobile app (AutoCAD for iPad).

AutoCAD is available in two editions: AutoCAD LT, which is a free edition limited to the desktop, and AutoCAD 2010, which is priced at $1,699. Other editions of AutoCAD are also available, including AutoCAD Web; AutoCAD Mobile; AutoCAD LT Mobile; and AutoCAD Classic, an older desktop app priced at $829. AutoCAD for iPad, a specialized mobile app, is not included in the price of a core edition of AutoCAD.
AutoCAD software is available in 32- and 64-bit versions, offering both desktop and online (web) versions. In addition to native files (DWG, DXF, DGN, and DWF), AutoCAD software can import and export a variety of standard data formats, including DWG; DXF; PDF; DWF; Flash; JPEG; bitmap; and vector graphics (VML). AutoCAD can export several standard file formats, including DWG, DXF, and PDF.
When a new drawing is opened, AutoCAD displays the viewport (a grid superimposed on a digital image of the page), with the center point of the drawing at (0, 0). The drawing window is shown in the center of the viewport, along with toolbars, buttons, and other options.
A drawing area opens along with the drawing. When a drawing is first opened, the drawing area automatically displays with the current working layer selected, and only items in that layer can be activated. When the layer is changed, the drawing area changes to reflect the new working layer, and new items appear in the drawing area to reflect the new layer.
