LEARNING EPISODE 3: Student Engagement

Active student engagement means advocating active learning in class. It involves all students in activities that help them understand content better by working with and reflecting on it. With active learning, students move from passive recipients of information to active participants actively engaged with new information. As an approach to teaching, active learning involves enthusiastically engaging students with course materials through discussions, problem solving, case studies, and role plays. Although active learning places more responsibility on the learner than passive methods like lectures, teachers’ guidance is still vital. In this module, student engagement is presented from the various research-based viewpoints. It also details the types of engagement, levels of engagement, and categories to measure the level of student engagement. To guide the future educators, engagement strategies are also incorporated in this module.
