Our western impact has now reached the Moon. The Chinese were there before us, but Apollo 11 was the first time that the American public was exposed to a man landing on the Moon. The shots of Buzz Aldrin landing on the lunar surface have to be seen to be believed.
The completion of the Apollo 11 mission had an amazing effect. I remember one night in 1963 I was actually saying at the time, “I have no idea what’s going to happen,” because I wasn’t sure that this country would have the courage to follow the vision of President Kennedy who said:
“We choose to go to the Moon not because it is easy, but because it is hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.” (the President’s speech on May 25, 1961)
The President’s words are still relevant today. After the Apollo 11 mission, the United States achieved the goal that President Kennedy spoke of so long ago.
Our Apollo 11 technology still exists today. The Apollo 11 technology in various forms is still on the Moon. Apollo 11 created the LEM which is the smallest of all the rovers used on the Moon, and even smaller, as the Apollo 11 lunar lander, the Eagle, still exists.
If you have read the history of space, then you know that the scientific community has always been the first to reach the Moon. We want to share that history with you. When the Gemini 11 mission in 1965 was launched, it was the first time that a crew flew in space and returned to Earth. That’s a big deal. We didn’t have a landing on the Moon until July of 1969.
When Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, Neil Armstrong put a small flag on the surface of the Moon to “claim” the Moon as his property. He carried the three astronauts over the surface of the Moon. That took many years.
