Evaluation
On Tuesday 19th October my level 3 performing arts class and I performed our second solo pieces based on our talking heads monologues. We performed the show in the theatre at Hertford regional college to our parents and friends who wanted to come and watch. In the show I made a contemporary dance to a song that I covered called 'lost without you' by freya ridings, I also had to make a last minute dance for my friends song 'behind blue eyes' because there was an instrumental part that needed to be filled.
In the show I successfully managed to really portray the emotion my character was feeling through the dance which went well. I managed to do this but using my facial expressions and using moves that are quite slow instead of fast and upbeat to set the tone. I also think my stage presence went well and I managed to stay in character, I did this by walking on and off stage as my character and not as me and also in the parts of my dance where I do a simple walk or stood still, I carried on using my facial expressions and used my posture and characters traits. a strength of mine is definitely my confidence I carry when I'm on stage, it radiates into my dance and my face and I think this makes my dance stronger because it doesn't hold me back, another thing im very proud of is, the day before the show I got thrown into the deep end and got asked to make a dance for my mates song and considering the time I had to make the it, I think it went really well. What I really liked about my peer, Kass', piece was how she used the whole stage during her song, she didn't stay in one place, she moved around and that could be really good for engaging the audience, I also liked how well Moses character was developed and how smoothly his piece transitioned from comedy into something serious.
in my piece, I think I could off used a more complicated array of emotions because although my monologue is about her husband passing away, and my dance was more conveying sadness, grief has many more different layers of emotion than just sadness. I also think I could have left more suspense in the choreography as the song built up, I could have moved slower before a big part in my dance or I could have more pauses to leave the audience wanting more. A weakness that I think I have is being too critical on myself, although I have confidence on stage, when i'm in the process of making my performances I can be very harsh on myself to make it the best I can. to be self critical can be good but to have good control of how critical you are is even better. to improve this, I will get more of my peers opinions on my pieces to boost my confidence. I think Rubys dance could have been improved if she had more confidence in herself because it held her back, I also think when doing some moves she should make her arms stronger to make the moves look cleaner.
Personally I think this experience was very enlightening in terms of thinking of the why instead of the what. In other dance shows I never had to think about the emotions being put into the dances, however in this show I had a stimulus and my dance had actual emotions attached and incorporated into it. I've learnt that I'm very passionate about what I do and when making my own dances I really put thought and emotions into it. I've noticed my peers all have a range of skills to each other and everyone is creative I their own way, nouns the same were all very different and should embrace that. Next time I'm going try and be less critical and make sure I express different layers of emotion than just one .
