Understanding this diverse group of trees will aid in identifying desirable species, which will allow a gardener to make an informed decision about the best type to grow for the local climate and growing conditions. Most maple trees are deciduous, although evergreen species exist, such as the smooth leaf maple (Acer oblongum, USDA zones 7-9). Maples range in size from small Japanese maples (Acer palmatum, zones 5b-8a) to large, stately shade trees, such as the sugar maple (Acer saccharum, zones 3a-8a). Moisture-loving maples have potentially destructive roots and should be planted away from structures, underground utilities and septic systems. Hundreds of maple species and cultivars are grown in gardens, although some are more common than others. A well-positioned Autumn Blaze maple can put on 3 feet of growth each year, so it will reach maturity faster than most other maple varieties. Sterile cultivars, such as Autumn Blaze, are especially attractive for growing in urban areas since they do not produce the seed litter of species varieties.
