Roblox is an online game platform and game creation system developed by Roblox Corporation that allows users to program games and play games created by other users. Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004 and released in 2006, the platform hosts user-created games of multiple genres coded in the programming language Lua. However, Roblox is criticized for the high proportion of children who use it. Roblox states that the vast majority of its users are between the ages of 11 and 17, and most of those users play games created by children.[14] Roblox has been described as a cross between Club Penguin and World of Warcraft.[15]
On February 2, 2017, it was announced that Roblox would be acquired by privately held social game-focused social network Tencent for $3.8 billion.[16][17] On May 15, 2017, Roblox Corporation officially changed its name to Roblox, Inc. under the ownership of Tencent Holdings.[18] On October 10, 2018, Roblox, Inc. announced that Tencent Holdings' former European subsidiary, MIX Entertainment Europe, would take over operation of the social platform.[19] In 2018, Roblox was added to the Motion Picture Association of America's Database of Sexuality in Media.[20]
