Christos KalohoridisSo youve just gotten to the end of Netflixs exciting new show, Locke and Key. Exciting, right? You may have just finished watching all ten episodes of the Joe Hill series, but as soon as the credits of that last episode start rolling, youve probably got some questions. Our advice? First, take some time and revisit the shows soundtrack—it rules. After that, take a deep breath. OK. Question time, now: first, when do we get more? When will the Savini Squad return? And second: what the hell just happened? And while we dont quite have an answer for you on the first one just yet, we do think we can be of assistance for the second. Whats happening with Gabe and Eden? What was that at the end? When the final confrontation between Dodge and the Lockes seemed to happen with about 20 minutes left in the episode, you may have suspected that there would be more to this story—and you were right. As we learned in the closing moments of Locke and Keys first season, Gabe has been a version of DodgeLucas (using the Identity Key) all along, putting his interest in the keys and using them (especially so when compared to Scot) into perspective (it also puts his cruelty toward Eden into perspective too, huh? His actually being a demon, and all). A major question worth wondering...did Gabe ever exist at all? Did whoever the woman we know as Dodge ever exist? Perhaps questions well find out the answers to in the future. As we learned in the final few episodes, Lucas was originally possessed in the past when Rendell Locke opened the Black Door and he was hit by a striking beam of light. When Tyler, Bode, Kinsey, and the rest of the gang head down, at first we dont see anyone get hit. But a flashback in the closing moments show that Eden was indeed hit in the arm by the blasts of light. As the episode closes and we see Gabe and Eden grinning at one another with enormous breakfasts (like Dodge had when she first escaped from the well), it tells us that going forward, things for the Lockes arent going to get any easier. Dodge has got help now. What happened to Ellie? After Ellie helped the Lockes, telling them about the past, and Lucas plan, we saw her return to her house, but never come back. A flashback showed that once home she was actually attacked by Lucas (along with Rufus). LucasDodge used the Identity Key on Ellie to make her appear as Dodge, and then knocked her out, leaving her on the floor of the Key House. Thats right: that means Ellie was thrown out into the abyss behind the Black Door, while Dodge runs free. Its scary for our heroes, because it means their biggest enemy is still at large: and they have no idea. In season two, saving Ellie will probably be a major motivation for the heroes of the story. What about Sam Lasser? Poor Sam. The show only briefly touched on Sams backstory, but he was clearly a deeply troubled kid simply looking for anyone who would accept him. What he did to Rendell was obviously unacceptable, and holding the Locke family hostage was...well, not cool. But his comeuppance, being trapped for (seemingly) eternity outside of his body on the grounds of Key House? Not good. He did kill that prison guard, and probably a lot more prisoners too, though. Not OK. Sorry, Sam. Given his proximity to the Key House, though, it seems like a strong possibility that his story isnt over just yet. What could Season 2 of Locke and Key have in store for Sam? Cisco Systems whirlwind of activity over the past few months wouldnt have been possible without the companys spread-out management structure, in which about 650 people are involved in cross-functional councils and boards that search out potentially profitable new markets, Chairman and CEO John Chambers told a financial analyst conference on Tuesday.We are the most aggressive this last year that we have ever been, Chambers said. He ticked off several big moves the company made just between Oct. 1 and mid-November, including four acquisitions around the world and a partnership with EMC and VMware. The deals included the major acquisitions of wireless IP infrastructure vendor Starent Networks and of video powerhouse Tandberg. Cisco couldnt have done all that without a new management structure introduced in the past few years, which he said ended the classic command and control organization in which one or a few top executives drive all new initiatives. The management system has raised some skepticism since it started to take shape at a large scale in 2007. Chambers has defended it as necessary to enter 30 new markets adjacent to Ciscos core networking business, a task the company is carrying out now and that Chambers wants to expand. Cisco can now get a new initiative off the ground in less than 60 days thanks to these cross-functional teams taking the initiative, he said. Chambers struck an optimistic note as he kicked off the annual conference at Ciscos San Jose, California, headquarters, calling the companys fiscal first quarter ended Oct. 24 phase one of an economic recovery. That recovery is still very fragile, he added, but said he is more comfortable than ever with his standing forecast of year-over-year revenue growth between 12 percent and 17 percent over the long term. Chambers identified video, collaboration and virtualization as the most significant areas. Video and collaboration are the two major moves were going to make this year, Chambers said.Looking farther forward, Chambers pointed to the electrical transmission industry as an area that might benefit from Ciscos brand of experience. That industry has 360 protocols and virtually no security — much like the early Internet, where Cisco first made its fortune as the pioneer of routing, he said.Chambers downplayed the growing field of competitors Cisco is facing as it expands, especially with its UCS (Unified Computing System) architecture that includes its first servers, introduced earlier this year. I know you want me to talk about HP, or you want me to talk about Huawei, Chambers said. We dont react to what a competitor does. We react to market transitions. Reacting to them quickly will have a big payoff for Cisco, he said. Theres a window of opportunity where the network will have a chance to become the key enabler of the future of IT and the key enabler of the future of communications. … Thats where we can become the number-one IT and communications company, Chambers said. Chambers said Cisco doesnt try to compete on individual products, or it would end up in a price war with Chinese competitors such as Huawei. Instead, it is becoming a partner with large enterprises and governments, selling entire architectures to help them cut costs and boost productivity in the long term. That was nothing new to analyst Sam Wilson of JMP Securities, who attended the conference.Cisco never wins when its product to product, Wilson said. Its architectural approach succeeds because a broad set of connected products makes CIOs comfortable, he said. CIOs are risk-averse. They dont get paid to take risks, Wilson said.That approach has often worked against Ciscos traditional competitors, such as Juniper, but its still not clear whether it will work against new rivals such as HP and IBM, Wilson said.
