Satellite television

Satellite television, also known as direct broadcast satellite television, satellite TV or sometimes direct to home television, is the delivery of television programming by satellite instead of through terrestrial broadcast signals or through cable television networks. In North America, the term HDTV is used for high definition television, either through digital satellite television or through terrestrial broadcast signals. For example, cable television signals are transmitted through coaxial cable, satellite television signals are transmitted through satellite dishes. The subscription is then billed directly to the subscriber, instead of through the cable or satellite service provider, Satellites distribute content through the use of a broadcasting satellite, which transmits a signal containing the television signal, as opposed to directly transmitting the content to a cable or satellite television provider. The origin of satellite television is the first satellite television systems used for wide area television distribution. The content is broadcast over an area by satellite, allowing it to reach the wide geographic area. The use of satellites for television distribution was pioneered in the United States and the Soviet Union, and subsequently spread around the world through a process of international diffusion. Satellite television is most often associated with high definition television. The most recent evolution of satellite television is the addition of digital programs through IPTV. By comparison, cable television has to be received and transmitted through a cable or satellite network which is maintained by a cable or satellite company, a terrestrial broadcast signal must be converted to an RF signal, then converted to an intermediate frequency signal, then modulated, amplified, and sent to a receiver. Each channel or program is then typically sent to a receiver by using a frequency, satellite television allows for an entire market of television programming to be delivered worldwide with almost no infrastructure investment. Satellite television technology also allows for simultaneous broadcasting of several television channels, content distributors can use satellite broadcasting to compete with cable television companies, as it does not require a cable or satellite network. But unlike terrestrial TV providers, satellite TV companies do not incur the cost of land or of building infrastructure. Satellite Television also allows for less interference from terrestrial transmitters, satellite distribution has the benefit of allowing content to be available worldwide, as long as there is a satellite to distribute it to. Satellite distribution is less expensive than terrestrial broadcasting, because of this, satellite distribution has the potential to provide television service to those areas where no terrestrial television is available.
