AutoCAD is a general-purpose program used for designing and drafting, and is very similar to the free and open source CAD programs Inventor and FreeCAD. History
AutoCAD began as MicroStation, which was developed by Micrografx in 1976. The version numbering system was introduced with AutoCAD 3.0 in 1993, with AutoCAD 3.0 Enterprise being released in 2002.
AutoCAD has been updated every year for over 30 years, and the most recent major release, AutoCAD 2019, was released on April 30, 2019. Prior to 2017, a major release of AutoCAD was released every five years; however, AutoCAD 2019 introduced a new version numbering system which does not follow the "major release" model. The first AutoCAD version that introduced the current major release model was AutoCAD 2007 in 2006, which introduced AutoCAD R2014. AutoCAD R2014 was replaced with AutoCAD R2015 in 2015, and AutoCAD R2015 was replaced with AutoCAD 2016 in 2016. AutoCAD 2017 was the first major release of AutoCAD since 2007 to have a version number without a "R" prefix; instead, the 2017 release was AutoCAD 2018. Since 2018, AutoCAD has used a similar major release model to other major AutoCAD releases.
