It was originally conceived to help architects, civil engineers and landscape architects. The software was developed as an extension to AutoLISP, an experimental programming language developed at Harvard University. In 1980 the original development version of AutoCAD (originally called AutoCAD360) was released in the fall of that year. However, it was not until January of 1982 that the first beta of the app was released as part of the Office Systems Division (OSD) of Harvard University.
In 1982, OSD released AutoCAD, initially available only to Harvard University’s architecture school students and professors, later it was available to others at the university. Development then continued at the next beta release in 1983. By 1985, the current version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD 1985, was released to the public and the original version of AutoLISP for AutoCAD development was incorporated into the app.
Since then, AutoCAD has been available for personal use at a low cost, and for a fee, for architects, engineers, landscape architects, and other designers. The app is now available worldwide and on different platforms. The app is designed with three major goals: to assist the designer, to meet the needs of its users, and to encourage innovation within the program.
Autodesk has worked with many other universities to expand the reach of the AutoCAD product. Since 1985, AutoCAD has been available on the Apple Macintosh platform. In 1991, the app was ported to MS-DOS, and in 1995, it was released on the Apple Macintosh IIx platform. Later versions of AutoCAD were also available on MS-DOS. The latest versions of AutoCAD are available on various Windows platforms.
AutoCAD was created as a desktop application. In 1999, Autodesk released AutoCAD Map 3D, a worldwide leader in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to extend the capabilities of AutoCAD. The GIS version, which was a completely new application, included the ability to import, edit and share vector data with other GIS programs like ArcView, ArcGIS, ArcView GIS, and ESRI’s ArcEditor.

Data management 
The user interface supports a model of data in multiple forms:
 Two-dimensional or three-dimensional coordinate systems. Coordinate system conversion, coordination and rotation of geometric data. Managing and setting limits, layers, sheets and views. A coordinate system converter allows converting any 2D or 3D coordinate system, such as a CAD model, to a 2D or 3D coordinate system used by AutoCAD. Coordinate system conversion is often required for project data sharing with another application, such as a CAD design application. Coordination allows defining the relationship between coordinate systems. Coordination is required for interoperability with 2D and 3D CAD software. Rotation is required to change the viewing direction of an object. AutoCAD allows multiple coordinate systems in one drawing, for example, one might have a vertical 3D drawing with two orthogonal 2D views (one in the X and Y plane, and another in the Z axis direction), which use two different coordinate systems: one in X and Y axis and the other in the Z axis. A rotation of 90 degrees around the Z axis would allow to rotate the 2D drawing so that it appears upright and the text is aligned on the bottom edge of the drawing. This gives the user the option to view it sideways, top or bottom, as shown in the accompanying figure.
 Data analysis 
The data analysis toolset includes tools to support the annotation of coordinates, line of sight (LOS), text, LISP and Viewpoints. The LOS tool allows the user to define the line of sight in 2D and 3D drawings. The tool can be used to show lines of sight for objects in relation to other objects, for example, a laser beam from a laser rangefinder. The data analysis toolset also includes tools for LISP and Viewpoint creation. LISP is the creation and editing of technical drawings and sections (planes) in a 2D or 3D drawing. Viewpoints are a tool for representing the view from an arbitrary location in space. Annotation is the drawing of technical information on the viewport or the selected objects. It is often used to indicate the XY origin of the object and the relation to other objects in the drawing.
 Import and export
