AutoCAD is a commercial CAD system developed by Autodesk. AutoCAD is also referred to as Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD LT (Advanced Technology) is a simplified version of AutoCAD, originally released in May 1995.

Autodesk AutoCAD is the development project of a  software company named Primavera Systems.
When Autodesk acquired Primavera in 2006, the management team from Primavera Systems decided to start a new project to merge the two companies. The project was called "Autodesk AutoCAD". The engineers had the difficult task of overcoming years of technical debt and the legacy code base of the Primavera Productivity Suite.
The new software was released in early 2007 with the name Autodesk AutoCAD 2010.
On January 27, 2008 Autodesk released AutoCAD LT 2008 as the first AutoCAD software version for the Mac OS.
On September 9, 2008, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2009.
On October 1, 2009, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2010, which features new 3D capabilities.
